The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the concept behind this domain extension is that all websites that use it should comply with specific terms. In other words, all dot MOBI websites should be designed to be opened correctly by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” created by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in cooperation with the .MOBI Registry. These have to do with how a web page is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), etc.

The restrictions have raised some concerns as the top-level domain name extension is the only one that specifies what devices must be able to open a website and the way in which this should happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a site should be built in such a way as to be opened by the majority of browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
